Safety Manager - BESS

POSITION SCOPE AND ORGANIZATIONAL IMPACT

The Safety Manager, BESS will lead all Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) functions at an assigned battery energy storage project site. This role is responsible for implementing and sustaining Moss’s BESS safety programs, ensuring compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements, and partnering with Operations, Electrical, and Commissioning teams to safely manage high-risk work.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This position plays a critical role in preventing serious injuries and fatalities (SIF) by driving field execution of key controls, including:

  • Electrical safety / NFPA 70E
  • Energy control (LOTO)
  • Grounding & bonding awareness
  • BESS installation and commissioning safety
  • Subcontractor’s safety performance
  • Site-specific hazard control execution

The Site Safety Manager serves as the primary safety leader at the site level and is expected to maintain strong alignment with the BESS Regional Safety Manager, project leadership, and client safety representatives.   

  • Lead all EHS functions on the assigned BESS project site
  • Provide direction and oversight to site safety staff if applicable (Safety Coordinators / Safety Professionals, …)
  • Implement and enforce the Site-Specific Safety Plan (SSSP), standard operating procedures, and BESS Standard Work Instructions (SWIs)
  • Partner with project leadership to align safety execution with schedule, manpower, and construction milestones
  • Implement and monitor safety controls specific to BESS installation and commissioning activities
  • Support field execution of electrical safety requirements, including NFPA 70E expectations, LOTO, barricading, and energy isolation controls
  • Coordinate with electrical and commissioning teams to identify and manage risks related to interconnection, testing, and energization activities
  • Reinforce safe practices around high-energy systems, temporary conditions, and changing site hazards
  • Ensure compliance with applicable OSHA, state, and local safety requirements and Moss company standards, including client expectations
  • Support implementation of EHS compliance plans, training initiatives, and recordkeeping requirements
  • Conduct routine field audits, inspections, and observations to verify control effectiveness and safe work practices
  • Maintain current safety documentation and support site readiness for internal and client audits
  • Lead emergency response planning and execution for the job site
  • Lead and support incident reporting, investigations, and root cause analysis for site events and near misses
  • Ensure timely completion of corrective actions and verify effectiveness in the field
  • Monitor leading and lagging indicators to identify trends and proactively address risk
  • Conduct safety stand-downs, coaching, and field engagement as needed
  • Build strong working relationships with project operations, subcontractors, and client safety representatives
  • Support site-level safety meetings, client interface meetings, and coordination with corporate/regional safety leadership
  • Lead by influence and collaboration while maintaining accountability to Moss safety expectations

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 5 years of applicable EHS leadership experience
  • BS in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent (preferred)
  • BCSP Certification (minimum CHST)
  • Experience supporting BESS, solar, substation, or industrial electrical projects strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of:
    • OSHA 1926 requirements (especially high-risk construction activities)
    • NFPA 70E fundamentals
    • LOTO / energy isolation practices
    • Electrical hazard controls in construction environments
  • Ability to lead field safety execution, coach teams, and work effectively across operations and subcontractor groups
  • Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills
  • Proficiency in verbal and written English required; bilingual Spanish preferred
  • Ability to travel and work at assigned project locations as needed
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), SMP or equivalent recognized safety certification
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Experience with incident management systems, field audits, and client-facing safety coordination
