John Mathews
Vice President, General Counsel, Energy
John Mathews serves as Vice President and General Counsel for the Energy Division at Moss, where he leads the legal team supporting the company’s energy operations. As a member of the Energy Strategy Team, he provides legal and strategic guidance to leadership and partners across the business to manage project risk and support successful project delivery. John also plays a key role in supporting external affairs and established the compliance program that supports clients in securing federal investment tax credits.
Before joining Moss, John spent a decade in private practice in St. Cloud, Minnesota, focusing on corporate, real estate, and healthcare law at firms including Hughes Mathews Greer, PA and Lathrop GPM. He later served as Senior Legal Counsel in the renewable energy sector, where he negotiated utility-scale Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contracts across the U.S.
John is driven by the fast-paced nature of the energy industry and values the collaboration required to achieve common goals. He believes that remaining curious and asking questions is essential to staying informed on industry developments and understanding the balance between company risk and client objectives. John earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Minnesota Law School and Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Saint John’s University.
